French language for work: business and IT

updated июнь 2026 reading 6 min

French for work is primarily professional vocabulary and a confident level around B1–B2. At interviews and in the office, they expect not perfect grammar, but the ability to understand colleagues and freely use terms from your field — be it business, IT, or the service industry.

What level is needed for work

The bar should be set according to your goal. Level B1 is a reasonable minimum for many work scenarios and basic communication with colleagues. For skilled professions, negotiations, and working with documentation, aim for B2.

It's also important to understand how levels are checked: employers or authorities often ask for a certificate — DELF or TCF/TEF. How much time it will take to reach the required level is discussed in the guide how long it takes to learn.

Business and IT vocabulary

It makes sense to build professional vocabulary for your specific field, rather than learning "all business terms at once": for some, it's business correspondence and negotiations; for others, IT terms; for a third group, vocabulary for a specific industry. At Memofluent, it's convenient to create a separate project for this and learn terms in the context of work phrases. Try a flashcard:

Learn terms within real work phrases — then they are immediately ready for the interview and your first day at a new job.

It's also worth building up "soft" work vocabulary — politeness formulas, phrases for calls and emails: these are often lacking in the first few weeks, even with a good level.

How to build vocabulary quickly

The logic is layered: first, general everyday vocabulary up to about B1 — a foundation without which professional vocabulary hangs in the air. On top of this, you build industry-specific terminology and typical phrase templates.

And all of this relies on regular review, otherwise, rare terms quickly fade away. If working abroad is part of your relocation plan, check out the guide French for emigration.
